If you are venturing into the world of international sales and ecommerce then you will likely need to identify each of the items in your packing list with a respective Harmonized Schedule (HS) tariff code. Called an HS Code or Customs Tariff Number it serves to classify the items in the shipment for customs and duties processing. Most online sale platforms like WooCommerce, Shopify, and Etsy may ask for this information in the product listing set up. Shipping services such as FedEx, UPS, and DHL will also request this code when preparing in a shipping label.
There are online tools, both free and paid, to get this done. The free ones are generally offered by government agencies but leave something to be desired in many case in terms of ease of use. Once you get the hang of them, they work fine.
While the codes are internationally standardized by the World Customs Organization, individual countries can add additional digits to the base identification numbers. In some cases, you may want to double check the numbers for the destination country of the shipment. This can also be helpful in determining the exact tariff rates for those destinations.
AI came close when tasked with finding such codes but was not close enough; that will probably improve in time.
